To rescue her was to rescue his own soul.

On a cold Parisian night, Vicomte Aleksender de Lefèvre forges an everlasting bond with a broken girl during her darkest hour, rescuing her from a life of abuse and misery. Tormented by his own demons, he finds his first bit of solace in sheltering little Sofia Rose.

But when Aleksender is drawn away by the Franco-Prussian war, the seasons pass. And in that long year, Sofia matures into a stunning young woman—a dancer with an understanding of devotion and redemption far surpassing her age.

Alongside his closest friend, Aleksender returns home to find that “home” is gone—replaced by revolution, bloodshed, betrayal—and a love always out of reach. Scarred inside and out, he’s thrust into a world of sensuality and violence—a world in which all his hours have now grown dark, and where only Sofia might bring an end to the winter in his heart.

Inspired by the 1871 Paris Commune, The Frost of Springtime is a poignant tale of revolution, redemption, and the healing power of love.

RachelDemeter_portraitRachel L. Demeter lives in the beautiful hills of Anaheim, California with Teddy, her goofy lowland sheepdog, and high school sweetheart of ten years. She enjoys writing dark, edgy romances that challenge the reader’s emotions and examine the redeeming power of love.

Imagining stories and characters has been Rachel’s passion for longer than she can remember. Before learning how to read or write, she would dictate stories while her mom would jot them down for her. She has a special affinity for the tortured hero and unconventional romances. Whether sculpting the protagonist or antagonist, she always ensures that every character is given a soul.

Rachel strives to intricately blend elements of romance, suspense, and horror. Some common themes her stories never stray too far from: forbidden romance, soul mates, the power of love to redeem, mend all wounds, and triumph over darkness. Her dream is to move readers and leave an emotional impact through her words.

The heat of their bodies mingled as one. With each breath, Aleksender drank in the sweet essence of his beloved ward. His mind swam with unorthodox visions and desires. He inclined his head, lost to the power of her nearness, entranced by everything that was Sofia.

 “Alek, my Alek …”

Each word infused Aleksender with a delicious and undeniable warmth. Intoxicated by roses and wintertime, he found it difficult to speak, difficult to think. Breathless, he swallowed and met the haunting depths of her eyes.

“Please,” she dreamily murmured, “I want you to kiss me again…”

Book Excerpt

As I worked at the knots in her shoulders, she sat up. The pressure on my sides diminished. Her hands came to my shoulders, and her claws poked through the fur at her knuckles. “Ah, such strong hands,” she whispered.

“Perhaps if I sat up, I could pleasure you more, master,” I heard myself say. Flares of pain detonated in my mouth, but did not sway me from my desire to give Saawth the delight she deserved. After all, she’d spent a few hard days on Earth.

She adjusted herself, and I rose higher on the cushions so I could work my fingers into the tense muscles at her neck. Her claws slid further from their sheaths. I became aware of her fur tickling my bare skin and a growing heat in my groin. I saw my touch gave her pleasure. Her growing arousal told me she wanted more. That fed my hunger to give more.

I had an inkling of what was coming and found it didn’t bother me. If it gave her pleasure to claw me, then I would give my flesh. Without hesitation.

“Yes, such strong hands,” she said again, eyes closing.

As I dug harder at her shoulders, her claws brushed lightly down my upper arms, across my bare chest. I leaned closer, working my fingers around the back of her neck. Unexpectedly, she arched her back, her neck rising beyond my reach. My hands came to rest on the dense fur of her chest.

“Perhaps the master would prefer to be in her sleep bowl,” I said.

“Yes,” Saawth growled. “But not just yet.” She leaned back down, eyes still closed. Of their own accord, my hands returned to the back of her neck. “There. Yes.”

As I squeezed the tension from her muscles, her claws scratched lightly at my skin. My thoughts about them faded as I focused on how I could deepen the pleasure she deserved. The sunlight continued to warm me, and seemed to leave Saawth feeling even more relaxed. A light breeze floated into the room, tugging at the longer strands of her splendid coat and cooling the sweat across my brow.

Saawth raised her chin and sighed. Her claws pushed harder as they traveled over my upper body. Each left a distinct trail of pain, but so far drew no blood.

If it gives her pleasure, I thought.

I worked my fingers even harder, my thumbs rising up to massage the soft underside of her chin. The tip of her pink tongue poked from between her lips. She shook beneath my efforts. Her claws paused momentarily. I braced myself for what was coming while trying hard to massage away the knots in her muscles.

“Yes…” she growled.

When it came, the first slash hurt.

The second did not.

Nor the third…

Book Excerpt

The hands shook me again. I opened my eyes and looked straight into those of the young girl. She wore a long, white dress, her black hair falling in tousled waves past her shoulders to her hips. She seemed to radiate light. My first thought was that we were both dead and I’d made it to heaven after all. Maybe you get points for stupidity in the service of others.

Seeing her up close, it was clear I had underestimated her age by several years. Though small, she was clearly a young woman—closer to eighteen than fourteen, possibly even older. Her dress was sheer, showing every curve of her body. My immediate visceral reaction was not something I expected to feel in heaven. Then the throbbing in my head returned, equally unexpected. As my senses cleared, I noted the scent of garbage mixed with car exhaust. I heard horns honking in the distance and shouts from the street. So, not dead, then. When I tried to sit up, pain in my head forced me back down.

With uncanny strength, the girl pulled me to a sitting position and looked me square in the eye. She squatted on her heels. Any glow I thought I had seen disappeared. Her face muscles tensed, her mouth drew tight. I couldn’t quite read the emotion, but I didn’t get the impression she was concerned for my well-being.

“You’re alive.” My voice sounded thin. “I heard a shot. I thought …”

“He missed,” she said. “And you ought not to have interfered.”

Ought not … who talks like that? “Those guys were going to kill you.”

She folded her arms across her chest. “I was in no danger. I was fully in control until you happened by. Do your police officers not tell you never to antagonize an armed intruder?” She sighed. “If it had been anyone other than me, you would be dead right now. You really ought to take more care.” She stood and turned to leave.

I stood up as well, stretching my arms and legs to test my muscles. “At least I know enough to be grateful when someone helps me out.”

She turned back to look at me. “Grateful? You expect gratitude for what you have done?” She shook her head and threw her hands up in the air. “In-credible,” she said as she walked away down the alley.

Reflection of the Gods

Author: Lisa Llamrei

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Newly divorced Das MacDermott longs for a fresh start. As he packs up and prepares to move out of the city, he spots a young woman being held at gunpoint by three men. Despite being outnumbered and unarmed, Das does his best to intervene. Once liberated, the victim seems oddly ungrateful, but on an apparent whim decides to join Das in his new life in rural Ontario. Aislinn, as she is called, returns the favour; with her encouragement and support, his start-up photography business takes off, and more importantly, Das is saved from loneliness and self-doubt.

Das, however, is never quite able to fully dismiss the contrary aspects of Aislinn’s nature, and is strictly forbidden from asking about Aislinn’s past. All seems too good to be true, and indeed it is. Aislinn’s unusual talents and odd behaviour, unbeknownst to Das, come from her demigod status. Aislinn is half-Sidhe, daughter of Fionvarra, Ireland’s fairy king, and a human woman. Sidhe wars have so disrupted the mortal world that Aislinn has joined with other immortals in an effort to permanently separate it from Tir N’a Nog, the fairy realm.

Born in ancient Ireland, Aislinn spends millennia as the plaything of the cruel and narcissistic gods. The pain of being neither human nor Sidhe is offset by her relationship to the Fir Bolg, another race of fair folk who take pity on her lonely state; and the refuge she takes in being Das’s lover and protector. As Das comes to accept the possibility that Aislinn belongs to a supernatural world, he discovers that the two worlds are set to collide in a way that may mean the destruction of all humanity.

Book Excerpt Triumph! A Battle Plan for Joy

The Book Gazette is hosting an excerpt from non-ficiton “Triumph! A Battle Plan for Joy”. Enjoy reading!

Book Excerpt

The front door slammed! My heart jumped, recognizing impending rage. Chester’s unmistakable footsteps pounded the graveled pathway, growing louder and louder. Soon he would be in the backyard where I was playing. “What have we done now?” I hastily picked up the ball and jacks, eased inside the house and closed the door without making a sound, hoping he would not find me. As he neared, a crack in the door gave me a clear view of him holding that dreaded razor strap in his right hand, and tapping it on his left. That meant a beating for one of us.

I decided to put more distance between Chester and me by tiptoeing toward the room where my brothers and I slept, but my legs became heavy and stationary, and my feet would not move. Then I heard him yell: “W. C., where are you?” I knew then on whom trouble had fallen, my little brother; but why? W. C. made a slow appearance from the other side of the house. I tried to stop looking, but like my feet, my eyes ignored me, fixing themselves on the unfolding scene.

Chester flopped his lanky body down on the nearby bench, which we called “the whipping bench.” “Come here, boy! Now drop your britches and your draws! You can give your heart to God, ‘cause your butt is mine.”

My eyes refocused on the thick razor strap. It was long enough to wrap around the hand for a good grip, with enough left for a good beating. It had big jagged holes in it that served a definite purpose. Chester used a pound-and-pull technique that caused the holes to suck in the tender flesh of our small bodies, intensifying the pain, and guaranteeing lacerations, bruises and blisters.

Standing at the whipping bench, W. C. pulled down his pants and shorts. Then he leaned his small body across Chester’s lap, so his head could be placed between Chester’s legs. Chester rolled up W. C.’s shirttail to expose his back. Then the beating began. The razor strap landed repeated blows with painful speed, without regard to precision. Sometimes it struck his back instead of his buttocks. Again I tried not to look, but couldn’t turn away. I closed my eyes and prayed without words, hoping God understood the language of pain.
