Cleptus Chapter

Caderyn stopped at the fifth apartment. From within there was scraping and a woman shouting as if she was on her last nerve. He counted the doors to make sure he chose the right place as the woman grew angrier, her shrill orders coinciding with louder scraping. Then came what approximated as someone spanking a naked bottom, a child bawling. He raised a hand intending to knock then chose instead to scratch his forehead.

Wrong casa. Had to be. Even if Cilo got married in the months since they last saw each other, the cleptus would hardly abide a ready-made family, not with his profession.

“Cilo?” Caderyn yelled. And again. Once more.

The door swung open. A feral-looking brunette glared out, her bony body sporting a loincloth and a breast-strap. The cesta—a poorer, untailored version of a strophium—flattened her tits to the shapes of empty waterskins and cut into her sides.

He mumbled, “Cilo?”

“Not here. You go.” She slammed the door in his face.

Miserable cunnus. Caderyn knocked, waited, knocked harder.

The woman again answered. Rosiness replaced the sallowness of her cheeks, blue eyes shining bright as an ocean on a sunny day.

“Cilo,” insisted Caderyn.

Not here. You go.”

“Where is he?”

She gritted and bared brown teeth. “Not—”

“Here and I should go, aio. First tell me my friend’s whereabouts.”

“Friend dead. Clepta corpse.”

Her assertion was a blow in the gut. “Dead…? When? How?”

“What when-how matter?” She tapped the side of her head. “You thick.” Then sniffed. “Phew.”

The door’s slamming boomed throughout the hallway. He lashed out with his foot, kicking the entrance open. There was a thud. A shriek. Before the woman could gather herself and come out from behind the door that had knocked her down, he barged into a room wherein a young girl rested upon a urine-stained mattress. Gouges marred the floor in front of her, the spike she had used clutched within her tiny fist. Snot ran over her lip. He scanned the wall and saw the hole for the spike from which the thief had hung his tools. The lone painting of harenarae fighting was absent as well. Like the tools and art that were gone so were the articles of clothing the thief folded and stacked under the window overlooking the avenue Caderyn had traveled.

The woman crept from behind the door wiping blood from her nose. “You no belong here. See, friend dead. Verum.”

A mouth that had gone dry turned his words into thick utterances. “For how long?”

“Last full moon.” She pushed at his chest. “Daughter me live here now.”

He retreated to the hall on heavy legs. “What happened?”

“Caught stealing. Died in—how you say square arena?—quadratum. But where make no difference. Neither when-how. Corpse never rebirth. You” —she waved as if shooing a fly— “go.”

Book Excerpt

Authors note to the reader: In the second chapter of the book, the reader is introduced to a second Sprite, Helia Eradica. Helia has been banished from her world of Forestlight after she was purposefully poisoned with a deadly virus. Exiled from her family and kin, she is forced to search for a means to prevent the joining of parallel worlds of humans and Sprite, and to stop the environmental calamity. In this excerpt, Helia flees a deadly mechanical being that has just killed her sister.

One minute her sister had been alive and then not. It hurt—a sharp, bitter, and painful thought to dwell upon, even for the briefest moment, and Helia banished it from her mind—as quickly as her sister’s bloodstains washed away in the current….

….She was in the safe grip of the river’s flow. Occasionally, Helia bumped against a protruding rock but continued unharmed as the limpness in her body absorbed any shock. She tumbled gently in the turbulence and swirling eddies, but eventually she sensed the flow of the current weaken as the banks of the river receded. Her view of the riverbank and its bottom disappeared, veiled by the turbidity of the water. The flow of the river continued. She closed her eyes and put herself in a trance, although she remained ready to move—quickly—if needed. She was inanimate, inert, inorganic, and without thought. Her deep brain—the reptilian and instinctive part of her mind—stayed ready to react, even while her conscious self rested.

Suddenly, she tasted the hint of saltiness on her lips, and she opened her eyes. Her body floated just above a layer of saltwater, and she noted the different ways that light refracted through the two types of water. It produced a visible boundary between them. It reminded her of the mirage in the desert she had seen many years before. Fresh water and salt water were two fluids that couldn’t mix, some of her kin would reiterate—a wisdom drawn from the old Sprite allegory—yet the tendrils of translucent salt water entrained themselves upwards into the clear fresh water above, and the two diffused into each other. It had been a tale that had fallen out of favor during an earlier time when the variety of Sprites had mixed and pursued common goals. But the urgency of reinforcing difference had come back into dominant influence again, and myths had become resurgent. “Observation and rationality had to supersede myth and faith,” Helia thought as she watched the threads of saltwater roiling and erupting upwards into the freshwater.

Helia’s muscles and body came to life, and she swam down into the warmer seawater beneath. Almost immediately, she could sense the lack of ocsaigin in the slack waters. Her skin prickled on contact with the salt water, and the thin cuts in her skin stung. She couldn’t stay for long in the depths of that foul water. Helia soon found what she was looking for. She spied a fish struggling below her, a perch that had been carried along with the fresh water in the river and then overcome as the salty, poisoned water had reached upwards from below. It did not notice her—perhaps blinded by the chemiae of the seawater—and she severed its head from its body with a razor-sharp blade. Helia had needs, hunger amongst them. With the fish’s body in one hand and the knife in the other, moving upwards in the rapidly diminishing plume of freshwater, she made her way to the bank of the river.

She left the water cautiously, with as little sound as possible, under the temporary concealment of a thicket of twisted branches and branchlets.

Book Excerpt

“Play something for me, Siobhan,” he requested between chapters.

I smiled and marked my place in the book. “Only if you play somethin’ for me as well.”

He nodded once, watching me closely. I slid off my bed and went to collect my violin from my practice room, which I accessed through the doors that connected all of my rooms together. After a bit of tuning, I returned to my bedroom. Apollo remained where he was–shirtless and beautiful, stretched across my bed with his arms folded behind his head. I shivered. He was the reason handsome men were sometimes referred to as Greek gods, though I was completely certain that no mortal man could ever look this magnificent.

Tucking my violin beneath my chin, I started to play and was immediately drawn into my own secret realm. It was like a new experience every time I played my violin. I became lost in the music, swept away by the melody, and forgot the rest of the world existed. Even in practice, I poured my entire soul into the pieces I played because, like love, I felt that true passion could never be put on hold. Music was me, and I was it. I couldn’t imagine my life without it.

With a final chord, I ended my piece.

Apollo didn’t applaud me, but his admiring smile was praise enough. “I’m looking forward to the day when that piece is finished.”

I blushed, realizing I should have known the god of Music would know an unfinished composition when he heard one. I wondered did he know I had written it for him.

“Your turn,” I said, setting my violin on the stand I kept in my bedroom.

“The only instrument I want to play now is you. Like my lyre, plucking all the right strings to make you sing.”

Book Excerpt

We left at dawn. The morning air was thick and damp, promising an unpleasant day once the sun rose completely. Once again, the only sound in the muggy silence was the dull clop of hooves on the road.

As we had the previous night, we rode with our weapons out. This time, I left my sword sheathed and held my bow and an arrow balanced across my lap, my other hand holding the reins. “So how lucky do you think we’re going to be?” I kept my gaze focused on the roadside, looking for any sign of a disturbance.

Roger’s shoulders jerked in what might have been a shrug. “To be honest, I haven’t felt lucky in a long time,” he said. He also scanned the woods, sword across his lap.

“Not even when I saved you from the noose the last time I was here?”

He cracked a brief smile. “Okay, maybe that one time. But you must admit, Lyla. You don’t tend to turn up when things are going well.”

“Well, aren’t I special,” I said, gritting my teeth. Unfortunately, he was right. I did seem to have a habit of getting sucked into Mallory just when things were falling apart.

We rode in silence for a while. As the temperature went up, insects began to buzz in the trees. I heard the odd bird call, but there was no sight of any other animals. “Did we scare everything off?”

Roger took a gulp from his water skin and wiped his mouth. “I doubt it,” he said, passing me the skin. “It’s too hot. Animals were probably out early, before the sun came up, and will be in deep shade until this evening when it cools off again.”

I took a drink. I’d been on enough long hikes to know that drinking water was important when it was hot. “Well, it makes things a little freaky,” I said. “We haven’t even seen a rabbit.” I pointed to a spot ahead. “Hey, does that look like trampled grass to you?”

“Perhaps.” Roger dismounted and examined the ground. “Something rode through here. Several somethings, actually. These impressions look like they’ve been left by hooves that were shod, not wild animals.”

Things are getting interesting at Tanner Middle School. The only official candidate for student council president is Jaycee’s nemesis, Trina Poppelman. Plus there’s a new girl in school. At first glance, she looks like she’d fit right in with the cheerleaders, but Jaycee senses something different about her.

Things are getting interesting in Mallory, too. Lady Starla is expecting an Imperial envoy to discuss new taxes. She plans to oppose the measure and asks Lyla to stand by her side in a show of support. However, when the envoy goes missing, the situation becomes a lot more serious than a proposed tax increase.

In this fourth installment of the Hero’s Sword series, Lyla and Roger hit the road to find a missing envoy before Starla pays the ultimate price for his disappearance. Along the way, Jaycee learns that winning isn’t always the end-game result.
